Experience
I have been a writing tutor, as well as also being a trainer for Census Bureau and for various non-profit agencies. I have only taken one set of standardized tests, the ACT -- and that was years ago. However, my combined score was 31, with a 33 in English. I have lengthy experience as a journalist, a freelance writer, and as a fiction writer. As a journalist, I have written for a college newspaper (Southwestern College Sun), an alt-weekly newspaper (Planet Weekly in Jackson, Mississippi), and as a stringer for the Biloxi Sun-Herald newspaper. I have earned about 30 different awards for my writing at the Sun, and I was named the Reporter of the Year for all 2-year colleges in the United States in 2013 by the Associated Press. As a freelancer and a writer, I have written for magazines and journals as disparate as Y'all Magazine and American Songwriter. I have written print ad copy and radio and TV commercials. I have written, edited, and polished short film scripts. I am also a genuinely published fiction writer. These were not "indie" publications, e-books, or self-published works. They were each through reputable publishers, each saw actual print, and each one paid at a professional rate (5 or 6 cents/word). In college, I have never earned less than an "A" for any writing class I've taken -- be it creative writing, composition, or journalism. For general English courses, I have only ever received one "B," with all the rest being As. I was rewarded with a Student of Distinction Award at Southwestern College in 2013, and have earned numerous scholarships and awards as a student. However, as a non-traditional student, I also have a vast well of different experiences from which to draw. I consider this to be the optimum mix needed for a good tutor.

Hobbies
It will probably surprise no one that I love to write and read in my spare time. I write in the sub-genres of dark fantasy, high fantasy, and horror, but I read all sorts of things. I have lived and traveled in many places in this country -- California, Oregon, Maine, Arkansas, Kansas, and Mississippi. I am an avid dog owner and lover of animals. I am also very politically active, but if my politics don't match yours, I consider it a non-issue.
